how to
PREPARE FOR YOUR SESSION
Your Portrait Session is about capturing genuine connections, milestone moments, and creating timeless portraits that you’ll treasure for years to come.
Some of my favourite galleries have a beautifully cohesive look and feel that truly represents the family through careful coordination of colours and clothing choices.
For all sessions, I love neutral colours that complement each other. Soft blues with crisp whites and grey tones create a beautiful palette. For a warmer tone, consider adding blush or gold accents, which look fantastic on all skin tones.
Navy is another colour I often suggest instead of black—it photographs beautifully across all session types! Choose several complementary colours that work well together rather than matching exactly. What are your family’s favourite colours? Don’t choose just one colour for everyone—multiple coordinating colours will add dimension and visual interest to your portraits.
Here are a few example colour palettes as a guide and inspiration.

MATERNITY
These short sessions are the perfect opportunity to visit the studio, meet your photographer, and capture a beautiful memory of your growing bump!
When you arrive we will have a quick chat, go through what you would like from your session and then we will get started!
Dress yourself or have a look through our Studio Wardrobe at the options we have for you to borrow. You are welcome to try a couple if you wish.
If time permits some mums-to-be also love a bare belly shot!
If you would like a more casual look then you can bring some jeans (non maternity) and a nice bra or top.
Please wear light or nude coloured underwear and maybe even treat yourself to something pretty!
Take a few minutes to pamper yourself and neaten up hands and nails. If you are a ‘get nails done’ type of mumma then make sure they are fresh for the shoot as your hands will definitely be in the images!
If dad is coming along, encourage him to neaten up the nails and give the hands a good clean too.
Some mums love to get their hair and makeup date prior to their shoot and this is up to your personal preference. It can certainly add confidence, but isn’t a requirement.
Light makeup and a focus on lashes works well.
Take your hair out of a pony tail for the day so it dries naturally as pony-tail-kinks are a thing!
Everyone is welcome! Neutral clothing will photograph best but it is totally up to you what you would like everyone to wear.
We know that you are unlikely to know how to pose for a maternity session but don’t stress, we have got you! We will guide you through each of the poses and give you directions as we go.
Same for partners and kids!
And don’t worry, we know that no one wants to be posing in front of the camera any longer than you need to be when you are that far along in your pregnancy so we will move fast.
Following your session we will show you your images and you can choose your favourites via zoom. Any products can be combined with your newborn session and create a collection with images from both sessions.

NEWBORN
A few tips for getting a sleepy and happy baby…..and therefore beautiful photos for you!
Baby needs to have a big feed prior to the session! This is the most important step so feed before you leave home and hopefully we will have a nice sleepy baby on arrival to the studio.
You can expect a couple of top up feeds while you are here, due to the warmth and stimulation so don’t be surprised if your baby has a little more to feed than normal during the session.
If you have a car seat that is remove-able, feel free to bring them in that if they are already asleep.
What to Bring for Your Session
-
A Dummy – Even if your baby isn’t used to one or hasn’t needed it yet, a dummy can be incredibly helpful in settling them during the session, especially with all the extra handling involved. Rest assured, we only use it briefly and never photograph your baby with it.
-
Extra Bottles (if bottle-feeding) – The warmth and gentle stimulation during the session may make your baby a little hungrier than usual, so having a couple of spare bottles on hand can be helpful.
-
Special Keepsakes – If there’s something meaningful you’d like included in your baby’s photos—such as their first teddy or comforter—feel free to bring it along.
-
No Need for Special Outfits – We have a beautiful selection of wraps, headbands, and outfits for your baby, so there’s no need to bring additional clothing unless you have something specific in mind.
We will undress your baby when you arrive so if you could have baby wear something that is easy to remove (nothing that goes over their head, etc) that will help if they are asleep when you arrive.
We have wraps, headbands and outfits for your baby so you don’t need to bring any special clothing for them! unless you want to.
Think of this as a great practice run for packing up everything you need for an outing with your baby—but don’t worry if you forget something! We’ve got you covered with nappies, wipes, bags, and other essentials while you’re here.
Need a bottle warmer? We have one available too!
Take a look at our studio tour to get a sneak peek of where you’ll be visiting!
Do you have a special teddy or a lovingly knitted blanket? While it’s not required, you’re more than welcome to bring any meaningful items you’d like to include in your baby’s photos.

SIBLINGS
If you had a newborn session with your first baby, here’s a little heads-up—this time might not be quite as relaxing! But don’t worry, we’ll do our best to keep everyone happy and capture beautiful moments of your children together—the next one can be crazy funny but will still make your heart melt sometimes even more!
Depending on the age of your kids, start talking to them about the session in advance to get them excited and so they know what’s going on. Keep it light and fun, and don’t hype it up too much.
Most kids feel more comfortable when they have a little time to adjust to the environment before stepping in front of the camera. That’s why we typically begin with your newborn, giving older siblings a chance to settle in at their own pace.
They can watch their baby sibling being photographed, get to know the photographer, and become familiar with the studio lights.
While we start with your newborn, older kids are welcome to watch, enjoy some screen time on an iPad, have a snack during a short walk, or keep busy with our colouring books.
Most toddlers have a short attention span, so we work quickly when photographing them!
We start with simple, easy poses to help them get comfortable in front of the camera. If they’re happy and cooperative, we’ll move on to more interactive shots.
The key is to stay relaxed—there’s no need to stress! We’re experienced in working with little ones and have plenty of tricks up our sleeve to capture beautiful images of your children together.
Keep It Simple!
- For boys: A plain t-shirt with shorts or jeans is perfect. Bare feet in the studio, and you’re all set!
- For girls: Simple outfits work best—a plain top with pants or a classic dress. Just keep in mind that short skirts and dresses can ride up when sitting or moving, so consider bloomers or leggings for extra coverage.
We love photographing neutral and white tones, but it’s most important that your family’s style shines through! If you need any guidance, feel free to reach out.
We’re also growing our kids’ studio wardrobe, so if you’re unsure, check with us to see what options and sizes we have available.

MUMS
So we would love to tell you that you wil have all the time in the world to prepare for your session….but lets be honest, you will be too busy trying to get everyone else ready! We recomend preparing the day before.
You are more than welcome to get ready at the studio – get changed, hair and makeup. Or sometimes it is nice to be ready and then you can just sit, relax, have a hot drink and enjoy the show.
Whatever suits you, suits us!
Start with what you want to wear and then match everyone else to you!
You are more than welcome to wear a dress from our studio wardobe
Otherwise choose something you feel great in. We love neutrals and try and avoid any big logos or patterns.
If you get stuck please reach out and we are more than happy to help!
Light makeup is perfect! Whatever makes you feel comfortable and great.
If you have long hair, wear it down! We totally know that it probably spends it’s life in a mum-bun, but wear it down if you feel comfortable.
Some regrowth can be very hard to fix when editing so try and make sure you have had a recent hair appointment so you are happy with how it looks.
Only fake tan if you do it often! And undesrtand that it might make you look a different colour to the rest of your family so go easy.
Yes they will be in the images so make sure they are clean and neat!
If you like getting your nails done then make sure they haven’t grown out too much as they are very hard to fix when editing.

DADS
Let’s be honest for a moment… Chances are, you’ve been told this photoshoot is happening, and you’re just going along with it. We get it—and we truly appreciate you being here! Rest assured, we’ll make the experience as easy and stress-free as possible for you.
Your key role? Be present, remind Mum how amazing she looks, and if you’ve got a toddler in tow, be the expert wrangler for the day!
We will help you, you have got this!
A pair of jeans and a light coloured shirt, chinos and a t-shirt – anything plain and simple in the tones that the other family members are wearing is perfect.
We love a white tshirt or shirt!
Please no big logos or graphics.
The studio will be warm no matter the outside temp, so jumpers/jackets etc aren’t necessary.
Book a haircut a week or two before your session so you are happy with your look!
Clean hands and neat nails….that is all we ask!
Nice and sentimental watches are more than welcome. We just ask that you remove any smart or sports watches as they will date your beautiful photographs.
